Making the Holidays Work for Your Gym

The holiday season can be both the most joyful and the most challenging time for fitness centers. Members’ routines get disrupted by travel, family gatherings, and endless holiday treats, leading to a temporary dip in attendance.

From an HR and staffing perspective, it’s also important to plan ahead. Encourage your trainers and front desk staff to set their holiday schedules early so coverage is seamless. Recognize that burnout can sneak up fast this time of year—consider small gestures like a team appreciation lunch or holiday raffle to boost morale. And don’t forget: the way your staff feels about their workplace directly influences how your members feel about your gym.

As you look ahead to the New Year, a little preparation now can make the first quarter run much smoother. With a few intentional steps now, you can set your team up for success in the new year. Consider focusing on these three areas before the year wraps up:

  1. Review your team structure and staffing levels. The post-holiday rush often brings a wave of new memberships—make sure you’re properly staffed to handle it. If you know you’ll need more trainers or front desk support, start recruiting now rather than in January when everyone else is.
  2. Refresh your onboarding and training programs. New year, new members, and often new employees—make sure your onboarding materials and customer service training are up-to-date. A consistent welcome experience sets the tone for both staff and members.
  3. Recognize and reset with your team. Take time to celebrate what went well this year, acknowledge standout efforts, and have an open discussion about goals for the year ahead. Even a short “year-in-review” meeting can build buy-in and boost motivation going into the busy season.

With a little planning and people-focused preparation, your gym can finish the year strong and start the next one with renewed energy and teamwork.

Why REX?

Running a business is one of the most demanding and isolating roles a person can take on. Your staff can’t always tell you the hard truths. Your competitors certainly won’t. And well-meaning advisors rarely have the real-world experience to challenge you the way a peer can.

REX Roundtables are built on the belief that the right peer group changes everything. Each Roundtable is structured around candor over comfort: polite talk is actively discouraged in favor of the honest, incisive exchange that actually moves businesses forward. Your chair and fellow members create a confidential, high-trust environment where the difficult conversations are held, and then acted on.

The results bear this out. In the fitness industry alone, the top 25% of REX member clubs are 50 to 100% more profitable than industry averages. That performance gap isn’t luck; it’s what happens when smart operators stop working in isolation and start working together.
